Milling and Paving Project for a Major Arterial Roadway in Chesterfield

Project Client: City of Chesterfield

We worked with the City of Chesterfield on this extensive resurfacing project for high-traffic arterial roadways that provide access to a major retail corridor. One of the biggest challenges we faced with this project was maintaining traffic flow and access to the retail shops while our crews completed the work safely and according to our forecasted project timeline.

Project Scope and Execution

The project involved the rotomilling and repaving of Edison Avenue from Baxter Road to Long Road, covering nearly two miles of roadway. Additionally, three key roads—Chesterfield Commons Drive, Chesterfield Commons East, and RHL Drive—were resurfaced to maintain smooth access to the surrounding retail district.

The construction process included:

  • Rotomilling the existing asphalt surface to a depth of two inches
  • Applying a new two-inch asphalt surface
  • Using echelon paving techniques to minimize seams and reduce long-term maintenance costs

Traffic Management and Efficiency

One of the most significant challenges of this project was maintaining traffic flow while working in a high-traffic commercial area. The team carefully coordinated milling and paving operations with the City of Chesterfield to minimize disruption for area residents and businesses. Here’s how we did it:

  • Maintaining Retail Access: While Edison Avenue was fully closed and detoured to expedite the paving process, the retail connector roads remained open. Careful scheduling ensured that customers and delivery vehicles had uninterrupted access.
  • Optimized Crew Deployment: We utilized multiple crews to maximize the amount of roadway we completed each day.
  • Fast-Track Completion: The City of Chesterfield initially planned a ten-day road closure, but through strategic planning and execution, we completed the project in just nine days, allowing the public to regain access ahead of schedule.

Project Success and Community Impact

The Edison Avenue resurfacing project was more than just a roadway upgrade. It demonstrated how thoughtful planning, advanced paving techniques, and strong collaboration with local stakeholders can deliver exceptional results. Our results left the City of Chesterfield with:

  • Safer Driving Experience: The newly paved road provides a smoother, safer surface for both commuters and cyclists.
  • Extended Pavement Life: Addressing surface wear before structural failure has helped the city avoid major reconstruction costs.
  • Minimal Business Disruption: Retailers and their customers benefited from a well-orchestrated plan that allowed continued access.

Our team is proud to have partnered with the City of Chesterfield on this critical infrastructure improvement. This project underscores our commitment to quality, efficiency, and community-focused solutions in every paving project we take on. If you have an upcoming paving or concrete project, talk with an E.
